Staff & Instructors

PLEASE NOTE: All instructors teaching with Moksha Yoga Trinidad are certified to teach Moksha Yoga or are in the process of being certified to teach Moksha Yoga.  They may also have other certifications in other types of yoga, which they use to enhance their practice and their class offerings.

Karen Blackman
Certified Moksha Yoga Instructor and Director, Moksha Yoga Trinidad Karen Blackman was born in Canada and moved to Trinidad at the age of six (6), kbfbwhere she then attended Mucurapo Girls R.C. School and went on to attend Bishop Anstey High School.  At the age of 16, she left Bishop's, finishing high school at Ridley College in Canada.  After returning to Trinidad for a few years, she went back to Canada where she spent another 18 years.  It was there that Karen had her first yoga experience, which happened just over eleven (11) years ago and from that moment on she was hooked!  Karen was diagnosed with Chronic Asthma, had major digestion problems...a result from her bout with Anorexia.  She hasn't had to use an inhaler since she started yoga...over eleven (11) years ago and though she is still working on her digestion, she now understands it better and is able to manage it...all thanks to her practice.  After becoming certified to teach hot yoga, specifically Moksha Yoga, she went on to teach in Toronto, Montreal and London, Ontario.  She later decided that the best gift she could give back to Trinidad was to come back and teach yoga classes so that hopefully, others would learn of the amazing techniques and healing capabilities of yoga and also try to help relieve some of the every day stresses that have been arising of late.

Troy Hadeed
Certified Moksha Yoga Instructor, Moksha Yoga Trinidad
Troy’s main mission in life would have to be creating positive change and spreading as much troylove as humanly possible. When not in his store or elsewhere trying to make a difference he spends most of his free time surfing, traveling or just chilling out. However, since beginning his Moksha Yoga Teacher Training he seems to want to spend more and more time in the yoga studio. As if he wasn’t laid back enough before, the concept of "mindfulness" really hit home for Troy and now he makes every effort to bring that into his class. Troy’s real education comes from ‘The School Of Life’ but he did graduate from the University of Tampa in 1997 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a minor in Spanish. In addition to making his way to completing his Moksha Yoga certification he has also managed to complete courses in Biodiesel, Photovoltaic (Solar) systems, and is an ISA (International Surfing Association) level 1 certified judge. He has a passion for learning and definitely has plans of taking his knowledge and certification of yoga to higher heights.
Troy owns Trinidad’s only natural clothing/hemp/reggae store known as Mystic Hemp and contrary to many beliefs Troy does not "smoke" and has never had alcohol making his views of Hemp's role in helping save our environment even more convincing. Troy would always say that Mystic Hemp is much more than a store as he continuously strives to educate, inspire, and bring people together; or as Mystic Hemp’s slogan says, “Changing the world one Leaf at a time.” We would conclude his brief bio in ‘Troy style’ by leaving you with one word …“LOVE.”

Ingrid White-Wilson
Moksha Yoga Instructor, Moksha Yoga Trinidad

This is me….. Ingrid E.
Baker, candlestick maker- lawyer, life artist, volunteer, traveller, logician, analyst, corporate refugee, deep-dive dilettante, sloth, evolving yogini- occasional paradox and unfixed oxymoron. What more need be said?
ingridLiving a life of change-in the nuance, in the awareness, constant motion, dormant fits, starts and soaring wings, movement- often barely perceived. Through it all, finding wonder and joy in things great and small- the moment, the hour, the day. Smiling appreciation for an elegant turn of phrase, the rapier-like skill of the right question posed at just the right time. The anticipation of entering a new place/space, marvelling at the perfect beauty of light that suffuses everything - colour, learning to breathe into the suffocating velvet or hard dark that engulfs the cave- forcing deeper sight. Enjoying the richness of sitting alone or sharing laughter, ideas, experiences and love with a family of global friends. Feeling such overflowing humility, powerful prayer and abundance in the endless living quiet and cool grace of the enveloping mists of predawn sunrise on a mountain. For this open handed rich bounty I give thanks and always, marvel at the sheer bliss and expansion and breath of standing in tadasana…Yoga. Practice. Life.
Now, always moving to and from a point of stillness, breath and flow, the warmth and heat generated through the practice softens, almost to a point on the horizon, the chronic pain of severe intervertebral disk displacement  and  other significant spinal  trauma I live with.  It creates space for the entangled nerves entwined around my spinal column, my back- releases my body, my heart too and expands it-fluid, honey smooth. Moksha, Freedom. Discovering the subtler mysteries I, we, carry within and now sharing it- this Pegasus- internal wings- transport for our ever-unfolding journey- movement that creates unity, alignment of body, mind, spirit with and in the ever present beyond. I bow with boundless gratitude to the Infinite that exists in us all. Namaste.

The Moksha Yoga Trinidad Dance Crew

Sonja Dumas, Director of the Moksha Yoga Trinidad Dance Crew
Sonja is a performer, choreographer, writer and arts development consultant.  She has performed with and/or choreographed for The Astor Johnson Repertory Dance Theatre, The Trinidad Theatre Workshop, The Metamorphosis Dance Company, the La Chapelle Dance Company, Standing Room Only, Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc. (NDDCI) and Reggiesonja Wilson’s Fist and Heel Performance Group.  She is the recipient of several international grants for her choreography, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Fellowship in Modern Choreography (USA) and project grants from the Inter-American Development Bank, Culturesfrance (France) and the Prince Claus Fund (The Netherlands).  Sonja currently runs her own dance company called Continuum Dance Project, where she explores societal themes through contemporary movement and gesture, often mixing them with African-Caribbean impulses.  She is a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia Business School in the United States and is also certified in ballet technique from the Royal Academy of Dancing (London) via the Caribbean School of Dancing in Port of Spain.  Sonja firmly believes that Charlotte Street is the Mecca of all shopping.  And she once (only once) made a pesto sauce that was to die for.  When she grows up, she wants to be President.

Allison Guerra-Seepaul
Allison is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of
Music in the United States.  During her dance career, she also studied at the Toronto Schoolallison of Dance as well as in Paris, France.  In addition, she was a recipient of an Alvin Ailey dance scholarship.  In Trinidad and Tobago, she has performed with the Astor Johnson Repertory Dance Theatre, Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc., the Carol La Chapelle Dance Company and the Trinidad Theatre Workshop.  Allison has taught dance at the secondary school level in Trinidad, and has also taught keep-fit classes to a wider public.  She choreographs and stages movement for the Lydian singers, and is eternally addicted to tamarind balls and curry mango.

Bridgette Wilson
Bridgette trained and danced at the Caribbean School of Dancing from an early age, and performed with the Metamorphosis Dance Company from 2000 to 2005.  With Metamorphosis, she has toured England twice, in 2002 and 2004.  Mainly trained in balletbridgette  and modern dance, Bridgette has earned her Associate Certificate in Modern Theatre from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and has also been successful in a number of ballet exams administered by the Royal Academy of Dancing (London).? She recently graduated from York University in Canada with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance with Honors.  In Canada, she was a senior member of the York Dance Ensemble, the professional performing dance company at York University, composed of the dance programme's most promising third and fourth year dancers.  Bridgette has returned home to give back to her country and those who helped mould her in early years as a dancer. She is now the rehearsal director of the Metamorphosis Dance Company and is a teacher with the Caribbean School of Dancing. On most occasions Bridgette can be heard attempting to sing her favorite songs as she performs them in front of mirrors in her home.

If the truth be told, she missed the memo on the fact that there’s a fine line between singing, and speaking in rhythm…

Dave Williams
Dave is a multimedia artist whose performance and choreographic statements investigate societal phenomena and visual culture.  In 1996 he founded Standing Room Only, now known as FirsTTfloor Studios, and has been a member of Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc.dave (NDDCI) since 1986.  He is a three-time recipient of the National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago’s Cacique Award for Best Choreography, and has performed at home and across the globe with NDDCI, Peter Minshall’s Callaloo Company, and others. He has also been the choreographer for 3 Canal’s annual Carnival show since its inception in 2004.  Dave was also a member of the founding faculty of Oakland School for the Arts in California and was the Artist/teacher in residence (dance) 2002/03. Along with his dance practice, he works as an advertising consultant in Port of Spain. This year he co-founded Erotic Art Week, the first annual festival of artwork, performances and talks around the theme of erotica.  He thinks Carnival season and mango season are very special times of the year.

GUEST MOKSHA YOGA INSTRUCTORS

Thanks to being a member of the Moksha Yoga family, Moksha Yoga Trinidad has access to various interning Teachers from around the world.  This gives you the opportunity to have variety in your classes and to learn from others, keeping your yoga experience fresh and exciting.

laura

Laura Sygrove
Laura Sygrove was the first intern to arrive.  After becoming certified to teach Moksha Yoga, she taught in Toronto, then went on to Taiwan to teach.  Laura brought not only her experience from teaching in Taiwan, but she also taught from her personalexperiences of living with Scoliosis and a fused spine.  She was able to show those with similar conditions some modifications to help them with their practice and in turn helped us all learn a few things for the future.

Jessica Robertson

Jessica Robertson is a Director at Moksha Yoga Inc. - the head office in Canada.  jessica robertson

She arrived to donate her time to the Power of Movement fundraiser.  She also taught the Restorative Yoga Workshop and a Flow class, all taught from her own personal experiences - 29 years and counting - and from living with chronic pain from as early as a child.

Jessica hopes to be back in Trinidad soon. She also sings Kirtan - a form of bhakti yoga - with her sister Deena and their group lila. The CD is available for sale in Trinidad from Moksha Yoga Trinidad and through Mystic Hemp on Ariapita Ave.

Aura Carcueva
Also known as Aura Maria Ramirez Carcueva!  What can be said abouauarat Aura...well...she was different *grin*!  Aura lives in Toronto, but grew up in Vancouver.  She comes from Philipino roots, but if you didn't know it you would swear she was Trini.  Apart from finishing her Moksha Yoga certification, she's also a dancer.  This helped her bring yet another perspective to classes...dancer hips (a.k.a. extremely tight hips!) and the importance of opening them.  Many people think that dancers have such great flexibility because of all the things they can do on stage.  But dancers beware!  Many of the things you do to train, actually end up causing your hips to tighten and can cause you long term damage in the knees and back over time.

Amy Yaccato

amyAmy began her yoga path in Ashtanga and later became a Moksha Yoga certified instructor.  She currently teaches at Moksha Yoga Montreal in Canada.  Her roots are Italian and she grew up Toronto.  She also speaks at least three (3) languages - English, French and Italia. Apart from being a Moksha Yoga instructor, Amy also dances and is currently studing African dance and art, including African drumming. Amy was able to bring the combination of her Ashtanga background, her dance background and experience from teaching Moksha Yoga classes in Montreal with her, making her classes as interesting and challenging as ever each time.

Jen Schweizer

Jen (or Mrs. Slade) came to Trinidad just after the completion of her Moksha Yoga certification.  Added to her list of trainings and experience, she attained hjen and aroner Anusara Inspired Status after many hours of training and completed the first stage of her Yoga Buds training.  She became the known as the Dancing Queen after appearing not once, but twice in our local papers at a
3 Canal show. This crazy side to Jen and her experience certainly brought a new flave to our classes.

Aaron Slade
On the flip side to his wife Jen, Aaron...the maticulous one, never failed to shock the MYT sangha, especially when he decided to make us do THREE sets of Dancer's Pose!  He just finished his Moksha Yoga Certification as well and is in the process of working toward his Anusara certification as well.

Jessica Lemon
Inspired by the idea that hot yoga was the hardest workout designed by human kind, Jess Lemon tried her very first sweaty class 6 years ago and has been fully committed to the practice ever since. While her free spirit and love of travel have taken her many places (Vancouver, Montreal, France, Trinidad), Jess maintains that some of her most profound journeys have begun and ended on her mat. She currently lives in Toronto but travels frequently for study and teaching opportunities. After completing the inaugural Moksha Yoga teacher training in 2004, Jess taught yoga abroad while completing a French languagejessand literature degree at U of T. She gave classes in both English and French to students at the University of Nantes, France, and after completing her undergraduate degree, spent three and a half months in Port of Spain, Trinidad teaching to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Subsequently, Jess loves finding the common threads of truth that unite people of all walks of life. She finds yoga to be a great leveler and source of community pointing to what, at the root, is shared among all people. She feels she has found a family in the incredible people she has had the privilege to know and grow with on her yogic path. Apart from Moksha, Jess has also studied Restorative yoga with Judith Lassater and recently Power Yoga with Baron Baptiste, whom she assisted at this year's Yoga Conference. Soon she will head to Mexico for more assistant training which she hopes will enhance her classes in the form of awesome adjustments! Jess feels incredibly blessed to be a teacher and student of yoga. She is living her dream!

Britton Darby
Britton looks content in this photo, mostly cause she is lying on the sand at Maracas Bay.  While lying in the glorious Caribbean sun has a huge impact on her happiness, nothing can compare to the joy Britton feels when she shares her love for yoga and love for movement with others.  Her passion for yoga started six years ago as an britoffshoot of her love for dance.  Britton started dancing at a young age and continued her training until she danced pre-professionally for five years in the contemporary dance scene in Toronto and Montreal.  Britton turned to hot yoga as a way to help prevent injury and to help balance her life in the high demands of the dance world.  After teaching creative movement, modern dance, ballet and studying anatomy, Britton went on to complete her Moksha yoga certification and has taught in Montreal, Toronto and Trinidad over the last four years. After dealing with knee injury's and illness Britton's appreciation for yoga as a powerful healing method has increased way beyond what she could have anticipated at the beginning of her own journey.   Britton understands and shares with others the importance of a dedicated, safe and consistent practice and encourages her students to listen to their bodies inner wisdom, to chuckle at themselves (even in dancer's pose) and to always 'MOVE' with breath.

Deena Robertson
Deena is the other half to the group Lila - a Kirtan group that includes her sister Jess deena rRobertson (pic above). Deena was also the co-owner of Moksha Yoga Danforth and Moksha Yoga London. Though Deena's visit was a short one, we did manage to get a class out of her and boy was that ever a class!!! Deena has been to many a teacher trainings that besides Bikram and Moksha yoga, have included Kripalu, Kundalini, Sivananda and so many others. Her classes have evolved with her and now she incorporates many of her teachings within the class. Hopefully we'll get her back here and the next time it won't be just one class!!!

Dina Tsouluhas
Also affectionately known as Dina T., Dina came down for the Tobago Retreat '08. She brought with her her amazing knowledge with regards to Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and so many other tricks up her sleeve, including making us do 108 backbends...WICKED!! She is dina tthe co-owner of Moksha Yoga Montreal and Moksha Yoga Halifax and besides her immense love for the ocean (trust me...immense love as she made sure we took her every day while she was here if even for only 10mins) she is also in love with her yoga and anything related to well-being. She has promised to be back so if you didn't get a chance to catch her this time around you most definitely will in the future!

Tara Kachroo
Tara has both Indian and Canadian roots. She was raised Hindu and ate curry just the way that we do here...this is probably why she fit in so nicely! This picture of Tara says it all about her trip to Trinidad! taraShe hiked and went to beaches that many Trinis haven't even seen. Her classes were great and at times just as unexpected as the beauty she found here. In one class you would totally know what toexpect and in another she would throw a crazy pose like Bird of Paradise at you...it was wicked! Most times we have the power to change some things in our guest teachers, but Tara was a toughy! Up until the day she left, she just couldn't get Trini Time...she was always ON TIME and probably gave us the good kick in the butt that we needed across here *grin*!

Joy Roca
Pic coming soon!
Teachers are everywhere you look. It starts with our parents, friends & if we are lucky to find those who leave a lasting impression we understand teaching is a two way street. We are all students first and foremost.

Joy came to trinidad during her first year after completing the Moksha Teacher Training in Kerala India in 2008. While she was here she got the opprotunity to take a Thai Yoga Massage course with Lotus Palm's founder Kam Thye Chow in Tobago. Also she was fortunate to witness Trinidad's most popular time of year: Carnival!!!!!

The first visiting teacher to stay the longest, she was also able to be a part of the transition from the previous studio spaces to the present home: The Sangha. This "chinee" girl learned many lessions while down here & got accustomed to many Trini ways, like calling her "chinee" --- but she is Canadian - Filipino through & through ;).

Not only does she value the experience immensley but she will take with her the light heartedness and cool vibes back to Canada.

Ahhhhh...Joyfull...Joyous...Josephine...one word comes to mind when we hear her name...BALANCE! Joy had a really great way of being able mix fun and work together so be sure to look out for her on DEEEE ROAAD!!!! FOR THE ANNUAL BACCHANNALLLLL!

Renee Sills

reneeRenee came to Moksha Yoga Trinidad teaching us a little Ashtanga Yoga, some AcroYoga and even some vegetarian and raw food cooking skills. Again, exposing us to even greater knowledge...all on the path to deepening our practice down here!

Aly Nind
Aly happened to come by the studio for classes one day and after finding out that also taughtaly yoga and better yet...a BREAKDANCE/YOGA FUSION CLASS...we were like WOW!!!! We got her to do a series of classes with us to show us the latest moves...VERY KEWL! She has made the journey from gymnastics to professional break dancing, to skateboarding, to competitive snow boarding, to injury and finally to yoga for healing. Each has its influence on her classes and she enjoys helping others to achieve their goals. For Aly yoga is about moving through the physical so that we can sit quietly with the internal, to experience freedom from our mental boundaries. Aly is intrigued by the many transformations in life. She is continually appreciating the journey and honouring her body as well as those around her.

Susi Hately Aldous
